How to pick the perfect fragrance
There’s no denying it - finding your fragrance is a skill. It’s like picking the perfect little black dress or discovering ‘your colours’ and working them into your wardrobe. To find your own signature style, whether it’s related to fashion, makeup or fragrance, requires you to know yourself - something that’s not as simple as it seems! It’s easy to get distracted by what you like rather than what you need. Ever found yourself dressing in your favourite colours rather than the ones that actually enhance your colourings? Deciding on a signature cologne or eau de toilette can be a little like that.
Thought fragrances smelt the same on everyone? Nope. Your own unique scent will alter them as soon as they make the transition from the bottle to your skin. Then there’s the matter of your personality. If you’re a party animal, you’ll want to choose a scent that’s as vibrant as you are. A subtle musky fragrance won't inspire you to dance until dawn, will it? In the same way, cosy characters who love to curl up with a good book probably won’t want an overwhelmingly seductive scent.
Bottom line? It can all be pretty confusing. That's why we’ve put together the Sephora guide to picking the perfect fragrance:
Choose your scent family
To start narrowing down the perfect fragrance for you, think first about what types of scents you’re most drawn to. Some of the best-loved types are floral scents, fruity scents and musks. Not far behind are oriental, spicy and woody scents. Whether you’re searching for a fragrance for men or women, why not browse a perfume shop to find out what tickles your fancy?
EDT or EDP - say what?
Anyone who’s ever entered a chemist or watched a perfume ad (so basically everyone!) will have heard the terms cologne, perfume, eau de parfum (edp) and eau de toilette (edt). So, what on earth is the difference?
It’s actually not so complicated. These perfume-related terms refer to the strength of the fragrances. Perfume itself is the neat essence which is found in its most concentrated form in eau de parfum. Up to 15% of edp is made up of pure perfume, compared to 10% in edt and 2-5% in cologne. With that in mind, select an eau de toilette if you want a strong, striking fragrance. If you’re shopping for a bargain, you’re likely to find the best prices when buying edt or cologne.
Take a top-down approach
When selecting a fragrance for men or women, take note of where perfumes place their different ingredients. Not sure what we mean? Think of it like this: a musk used as top note will be far more noticeable when used as a top note than a base note. Top notes tend to hit the senses first, while base notes are slow burners. When choosing a cologne or perfume containing your favourite scent, ensure it’s a top note for maximum impact.
Which Hugo Boss fragrances could work for you?
